H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco

H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco renews the commitment of his great-grandfather Prince Albert I and his father Prince Rainier III towards the environment of our planet. Mindful of the scientific community, he does not hesitate to travel to the field to directly observe the threats weighing on the planet, having been notably the only Head of State to have traveled to both poles.

A Head of State recognized for his commitment, H.S.H. Prince Albert II presents current environmental issues to other world leaders. He was notably entrusted with the preparation of the "oceans" component of the Rio +20 conference in 2011 by the Secretary of the United Nations.

H.S.H. Prince Albert II was among the first to bring focus to the alamring state of Mediterranean bluefin tuna stocks in 2008 due to uncontrolled overfishing. As Monaco was arguing without success for the recognition of bluefin tuna as a threatened species to CITES, H.S.H. Prince Albert II convinced the restaurateurs and traders of the Principality to stop offering this threatened fish in their establishments. The ensuing international realization of this threat led to the establishment of a efficient management program for these exceptional fisheries.

In January 2009, H.S.H. Prince Albert II drew the attention of decision-makers to the acidification of the oceans, the other threat from CO2 emissions along with climate change that combine to deteriorate the balance of the oceans. He therefore supported the Initiative by more than 150 world-renowned scientific experts from 26 different countries, to raise the alarm in a common text, the "declaration of Monaco".

Honourary President of the Oceanographic Institute, he promotes a broad dissemination of knowledge among the public and decision-makers.

He is conscious of the fact that any solution will only be possible through the obilisation of the entire civil society and major economic actors. H.S.H. Prince Albert II wanted to position the Oceanographic Institute as a mediator between scientific experts, associations for the conservation of the oceans, entrepreneurs and the media. Such is the objective of the Monaco Blue Initiative that he established in 2010.

In June 2006, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco also decided to create His Foundation so as to answer the preoccupying threats that weigh on the environment of our planet.
